Description

Sodium is mainly found bound to chloride as sodium chloride (salt). Sodium and salt content are both reported in composition tables. Sodium can occur in foods also unbound. The salt content of food items can be calculated multiplying sodium content by 2,5. Sodium plays an essential role in the transmission of nerve impulses, and regulation of osmotic pressure. Sodium is also required for the function of muscle.
