Lactose

Description

Lactose or milk sugar is a disaccharide composed of glucose and galactose. Lactose is not absorbed as such, so lactase enzyme disintegrates lactose into monosaccharides. Lactase deficiency causes the symptoms of lactose intolerance, for example stomachache, swelling and diarrhea. 17 percent of Finnish people suffer from the deficiency of lactase. The only sources of lactose are milk, dairy products and milk containing foods and pastry.
