a-linoleic acid is an essential fatty acid. It is a precursor for polyunsaturated, long-chain n-3 fatty acids. These derivatives are largely in brain and retina. a-linoleic acid is a precursor of eicosanoids. They are hormone-like compounds, that have many important physiologic functions for instance in kidneys, circulatory system, gastrointestinal tract and uterine. Especially plant oils contain lots of a-linoleic acid.
